Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) Scheme:
GENERAL INFORMATION:
     OCI Scheme is operational from 02.12.2005
     The Constitution of India does not allow holding Indian citizenship and citizenship of a foreign country simultaneously. Based on the recommendation of the High Level committee on Indian Diaspora, the Government of India decided to grant Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) commonly known as ‘dual citizenship’. Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) of certain category as has been specified in the Brochure who migrated from India and acquired citizenship of a foreign country other than Pakistan and Bangladesh, are eligible for grant of OCI as long as their home countries allow dual citizenship in some form or the other under their local laws.
2.   Persons registered as OCI have not been given any voting rights, election to Lok Sabha/Rajya Sabha/Legislative Assembly/Council, holding Constitutional posts such as President, Vice President, Judge of Supreme Court/High Court etc. Registered OCIs shall be entitled to following benefits:
(i) Multiple entry, multi-purpose lifelong visa to visit India;
(ii) Exemption from reporting to Police authorities for any length of stay in India; and
(iii) Parity with NRIs in financial, economic and educational fields except in the acquisition of agricultural or plantation properties.
3. Any further benefits to OCIs will be notified by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) under section 7B(1) of the Citizenship Act, 1955.
4. A person registered as OCI is eligible to apply for grant of Indian citizenship under section 5(1)(g) of the Citizenship Act, 1955 if he/she is registered as OCI for five years and has been residing in India for one year out of the five years before making the application.

  1. The entire OCI application and processing system, including the submission of the application, uploading the requisite documents and payment of fee has been brought online.
  1. The date for submission of the application for registration as OCI cardholder by the erstwhile PIO cardholders is extended till 31.12.2017. This cutoff date will be only for submission of the applications online by the applicants.

 

  1.  The applicants can submit the applications from anywhere. The grant of OCI card in lieu of  the PIO card will be on a gratis basis and no fee shall be payable by the applicants.
  1. The Mission/Post/FRRO concerned will verify only the genuineness of the PIO card issued and clear the application for registration as OCI cardholder. In case the PIO card was issued from the Mission/Post/FRRO other than where the application for registration as OCI cardholder has been made, the issuing authority shall get confirmation regarding the genuineness of the PIO Card issued from the authority who issued the PIO Card initially, at the earliest through electronic means. The whole exercise shall be completed preferably within a fortnight of submission of the application online.

 

  1. The OCI Card shall be issued by the Indian Mission/Post/FRRO concerned within the jurisdiction of the applicant's place of residence. The applicant will have to approach the Indian Mission/Post/FRRO concerned only for collecting the OCI Card by surrendering the PIO Card.

STEPS TO BE FOLLOWED FOR APPLYING OCI:

  1. Visit website           www.passport.gov.in/oci/
  2. Click on proceed
  3. Choose the requisite box (the type on which applicant want to fill the form).
  4. Form will be filled in two parts: PART A and PART B
  5. After completion of PART A applicant has to upload their photograph(2inch by 2 inch of size) and Signature or Thumb impression.
  6. After that complete the PART B part of the form and submit the form
  7. After submission of form a file No. Starting with TTOP and ending with 17 will be generated.
  8. Take a printout of the form.
  9. Upload your requisite documents and visit to us at 6 Victoria Avenue, Port of Spain on any working days between 0930 hrs to 1230 hrs alongwith followings
  10. Form duly signed by the applicant and in case of applications for minors, applications should be signed by parents.
  11. Copy of documents alongwith original
  12. 2 inch by 2 inch size photograph(2 copies)
  13. Fee: Requisite fee to be paid through Demand Draft in favour of High Commission of India, Port of Spain. Detais of the fee to be charged is mentioned below:
